Freedmen's Land Certificates Issued from Edisto Island, South Carolina by Mr. Alden, Agt. of Bureau

Enclosed will be found one half (½ ) doz. Blanks of the kind that have been issued to the Freedmen. This Report of Transcript shows the date when these Blanks have been issued; the No. of each Blank; the names of Freedmen holding said Blanks; the number of persons in the families of said Freedmen and the Parish Island and Plantation where each tract of forty (40) acres of land is located. The absence of names of Freedmen in some cases - as at Nos. 4 - 23 - 24 - 28 - 29 -- & 30 is accounted for in this way: small tickets or certificates were given to certain Freedmen in the absence of printed land Blanks like these enclosed, and it was expected that these irregular tickets would be exchanged for the regular Blanks, and only the Nos. Of such papers were preserved, but the holders have never returned to obtain regular land Blanks.

Each Freedman staked out his own land, subject to future official survey and inspection.

James Island is in St. Andrews Parish and Johns & Wadmelaw Islands are in St. Johns Colleton Parish. This Transcript is a correct copy taken from the book in which the issue of land is recorded.
